Baby Settling Tips For a Happy Baby

Here are some ways to keep your newborn baby happy and settled. It can be stressful to watch your baby crying uncontrollably and you don't know why their crying. Hunger and medical health aside it could be that they are uncomfortable. Try these six tips for a happy baby.

1. Check temperature

Especially in the first few weeks your baby is used to a warm environment in the womb and they can get very cold in the first 24 hours. Depending on the time of year you may need more or less layers of clothing i.e.; beanie, bunny rugs or just a singlet and muslin rug, a light cotton rug. You can check the temperature behind the neck or under their arms. When they are a little bit older, a general rule of thumb is for bubs to have an extra layer of clothing than mum or dad. Don't forget the beanie or sun hat.

2. Signs of wind

Sometimes a way to tell if your baby has to burp is look at the top of the mouth (between the top lip and nose) this area becomes ever so slightly grey/blue in colors. Put bubs on your shoulder and pat/rub their back, most times they'll burp. It becomes easier to notice this slight discoloration after a few months and with practice.

3. Use a cover on the pram

Always be prepared for weather changes when having a pram outing. Invest in a rain/wind and a sun/shade protector. They also help keep the sticky little flies and mosquitoes mugZ2V0IGF3YXk=#">away from baby.

4. Pacifier positives and negatives.

There has been a lot said about the positives and negatives of pacifier. If you can get mugZ2V0IGF3YXk=#">away with your baby not having one then go for it. If on the other hand the baby settles better with a pacifier then use it.

Don't confuse giving the pacifier, with them actually needing a feed though. Sometimes a baby wants to explore with their hands and mouth so a pacifier can be a disadvantage.

Don't worry what your friends and relations think, if bubs is happy with a pacifier then you are likely to be happier and get more sleep.

5. Use barrier creams to prevent diaper rash

By using a barrier cream when you notice the area a little red, you can minimize the chance of nasty nappy rash.

6. Teething

The teething process can be painful for bubs. Try rubbing their gums with your finger. Water filled teething rings can be put in the fridge (the freezer is too cold) and the cold can be soothing. Teething gels should be used conservatively. Teething rusks can be used but generally not until from six to eight months should they be used.
